  • ASSOULINE
  • New York, NY

Job Description

Founded by Prosper and Martine Assouline, Assouline has published over 1,500 titles across international markets on subjects including architecture, design, fashion, gastronomy, lifestyle, photography, and travel. The Editorial Assistant supports the Editorial team across the full life of each book, from first manuscript to final proofs. Working closely with the Editors, the Design team, and the Editorial Director, the Editorial Assistant keeps projects organized and on schedule, manages day-to-day author correspondence, and ensures clean, accurate copy in layout. This role is an ideal next step for an early-career editor ready for growing responsibility, with a clear path toward managing titles independently.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Editors in managing multiple book projects simultaneously from start to finish in a fast-paced environment.
  • Coordinate with authors, freelance writers, and subject matter experts to keep projects on schedule, flagging risks to the Editor early.
  • Communicate with authors and other key project players to provide regular project updates.
  • Maintain schedules, trackers, and files for each title, including manuscripts, image credits, permissions, and approvals.
  • Proofread and fact-check manuscripts, captions, and credits, and input corrections in layout using InDesign.
  • Partner with the Design team to move pages through each round of review with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Assist with drafting copy such as captions, flap copy, and book descriptions under the guidance of the Editor.
  • Take ownership of select smaller projects, or sections of larger titles, as experience grows.

QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field
  • 2+ years of editorial experience (internships included) at a publishing house, magazine, or related publication
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, high-level correspondence style
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks across several projects at once
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to schedules and deadlines
  • High level of attention to detail, ex. error-free copy
  • Working knowledge of InDesign in relation to typesetting and correcting copy in layout, with the desire to build a strong command of it
  • Experience with editing and/or writing for a publication devoted to content relevant to our books: art, design, fashion, travel, luxury brands

Assouline is an equal opportunity employer, and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.

The appointed candidate will be offered a salary within the range of $52,000-$58,000 annually.
